    The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’
27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

REFLECTION
Reflection: Share now or never
Jesus did not name the rich man in the gospel story most probably because He is referring to everyone who has something to share but refuses to do it. Lazarus represents the needy of the world who are happy eating scraps that fall from rich men’s tables.
When our temporary stay on this planet ends, we go to the other world where life does not end. From the story, the rich man went to hell where he was tormented day in and day out while Lazarus was sent to heaven where he was comforted. Observe that even in hell, the rich man has not changed at all. He wanted Lazarus to serve him without any remorse on his part. On a positive note, he is concerned about his family he left behind.
The lesson that we learn from the gospel reading is that we must learn to be kind and concerned towards the needs of others and not always think about our own happiness.

PRAYER

Let us join our hands and bow our heads in prayer.

Prayer for a selfless and compassionate heart:

Dear Lord, please help us to feel your spirit deep within our heart. Help us to feel your strength behind us, and to choose selflessness over selfishness. Help us to show compassion and kindness to other people, those that we know and those that we will never meet. Help us to realize that you love all of your children, including those that we may not like or respect, and those who themselves have
chosen the wrong path. Help us to always keep that in mind and look for ways to help, not hurt people. Let our hearts overflow with Your love, and help us to spread that
spectacular, sustaining love to those who are without it. This prayer we make in Jesus’s name. Amen.

We shall now say the Lord’s Prayer.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

Happiness doesn’t come through selfishness, but through selflessness. Everything you do comes back around.

Thank you and have a wonderful day.
