Scripture portion:

The scripture reading is taken from Luke chapter 6 verse 37 and 38.

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

The word of the Lord.

Story:

A young couple moved into a new neighbourhood. Living next door to this new couple was Bill and Mary.

One morning while eating breakfast, Mary looked outside their window and watched her young neighbour hanging the clothes on the clothes line.

“That laundry is not very clean; our young neighbour doesn’t know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap” she told Bill.

Bill looked on, remaining silent.

Every time her young neighbour hung her washing out to dry, Mary made the same comments and Bill continued to say nothing.

A month later, Mary was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to Bill, “Look, she’s finally learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this?”

Bill replied, “Honey I might have an answer for you. “Really” Mary said.

Bill said, “I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows. I guess we finally learned to wash the windows!”

Reflection:

What windows are we looking out from? What we see when watching others depends on the clarity of the window through which we look.

So don’t be too quick to judge others, especially if your perspective of life is clouded by anger, jealousy, negativity or unfulfilled desires.

Before making a judgement we must gather all the facts and spend time to understand a person’s character and their choices. We must not base our judgement on surface information. It is always wise to judge patiently.

Thought for the day:

If you judge people you have no time to love them.

Let us pray:

Dear God, help us not to judge others based on appearances or situations. Instead of judging people let us take the same time to pray for them, to reach out to them and to accept them with your love. It can be difficult to love others when they appear troublesome, or misjudge or reject us, or when we are weary and preoccupied. We ask you for your grace and strength to love and understand all our brothers and sisters.  Help us to see people the way you see them, and to be filled with compassion. Help us to respond with love instead of anger and bitterness. Amen.

Let us continue with the Lord’s Prayer…
